The Washington Heights/Inwood Film Class presents:

The Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman

Sunday, September 18th @7:30PM

As described by Liz Hoelzle of Teacher’s College: “Produced by The Grassroots Education Movement and presented by Real Reform Studios, this film is different. It was created not by a Hollywood director, but by working public school teachers and parents, on the ground and in the midst of the public education arena. The film directly challenges Waiting for ‘Superman’ and systematically breaks down the tenets of that film, calling its claims “myths,” and presenting what they see as the reality of the situation”

Start time 7:30 sharp!  The film is an hour long and discussion will be concluded by 9:30.

Special Guests will facilitate conversation after the film!

The film’s Co-Narrator, Brian Jones, a teacher, actor and activist who lives in Washington Heights, will discuss the film and the impact of budget cuts, high-stakes standardized testing, and education “reform” on public schools in New York City.

Noah Gotbaum, Community Education Council District 3 member, NYC public school parent-activist, Co-Founder of New York Cares, and son of labor activist Victor Gotbaum and step-son of Betsy Gotbaum, former Public Advocate, will discuss the impact of charter schools and privatization on traditional public schools.

Judith Amaro, Community Education Council District 6 member, public education advocate, and public school parent will help guide the discussion.

Please join us at the Hebrew Tabernacle

551 Fort Washington Avenue (@185th street)

  • We’ll be passing the hat for PS/IS 187, our community public school, and raffling off dinner for two at a local restaurant!
  • WaHI Film Class members are free; there is a suggested donation of $5 for others.
  • RSVP at wahifilmclass@gmail.com
  • For more information about the film see here: http://www.waitingforsupermantruth.org/
